I'M THANKFUL FOR STRETCHY PANTS

November 26, 2012

this is what we looked like before stuffing our faces. (we have this horrible trend in our family of taking holiday photos after we eat, after too many glasses of wine and too many bread rolls.) not this year! whaaaat.

here's to being thankful for the people you love.
and here's to new beginnings.

MY "TREAT YO-SELF" WEEKEND

November 20, 2012

I forgot how gorgeous sacramento is in the fall.

last weekend was rainy and cozy and delightful. my UH-mazing sister olivia hooked me up at her salon with an impromptu cut / color and facial. having a sister who works in the "making you feel fabulous" business is the best thing in the world. thanks, liv. xo (shout out to shayla! I love my hair and you're a doll!) jax and I had lunch at 33rd street but alas, I was so disarmed by her loveliness, I forgot to take a picture. but it happened! and it fabulous. trina (yes, this ginger trina!) and I went to brunch at fox & goose - a very cool english pub that is always packed. but when you're waiting to be seated and you're with your girlfriend, it's all good. and then we embarrassed ourselves by doing our best "blogger pose" on the street. it was nice to see some old faces and wander the streets that I used to wander.

hope you had a great weekend, friends.
p.s. I might have listened to christmas music all weekend.

SWEET POTATO CASSEROLE

November 15, 2012

last night, in a tiny kitchen in the mission, alisa and I whipped up my mama's sweet potato casserole. it's hard to wrap my brain around the fact that thanksgiving is next week, and christmas only a few weeks after. I've found an apartment! still waiting on a move in date, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it's soon. I can't wait to show you pictures of my new neighborhood....it's darling.

mama's sweet potato casserole.
  • 4 pounds sweet potatoes, peeled and chopped
  • 1 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup evaporated low-fat milk
  • 6 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 large eggs
  • Cooking spray

yummy crunchy topping.
  • 2/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/3 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 4 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • 1/2 cup cornflakes
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon

1 Preheat oven to 350°.
To prepare potatoes, place potatoes in a Dutch oven; cover with water. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat, and simmer 20 minutes or until tender; drain. Cool 5 minutes.
Place potatoes in a large bowl; add granulated sugar, evaporated milk, melted butter, salt, and vanilla. Beat with a mixer at medium speed until smooth. Add eggs; beat well. Pour potato mixture into a 13 x 9–inch baking pan coated with cooking spray.
To prepare topping, weigh or lightly spoon flour into a dry measuring cup; level with a knife. Combine flour, brown sugar, and salt; stir with a whisk. Stir in melted butter. Sprinkle flour mixture evenly over potato mixture; arrange pecans evenly over top. Bake at 350° for 25 minutes or just until golden.
Preheat broiler (remove casserole from oven).
Broil casserole 45 seconds or until topping is bubbly. Let stand 10 minutes before serving.

NATIONAL SANDWICH DAY + EATING LIKE A CARNIE

November 5, 2012

news flash - I ate a lot this weekend. it was totally justified though...saturday was national sandwich day! yes, it's a thing. naturally I celebrated with a going home for thanksgiving from ike's (and crossed that off my fall to-do list). that night megan and I ate at straw, a whimsical carnival-inspired restaurant in hayes valley. we're talking a tilt-a-whirl love seat serving as a booth, cotton candy cocktails, goldfish cracker appetizers and WAFFLE MONTE CRISTOS. no, your eyes are not deceiving you. and duh, mason jars. because everything adorable and whimsical today gets served in mason jars.

happy monday! what did you do this weekend?

the list that megan is holding is the lady boner 12.
sometimes I'm randomly inspired to make lists on restaurant napkins.
it's kinda my thing. did we forget anyone on the list?

A NOTE TO SELF

November 1, 2012

a newly single human must remember / relearn:

how to sleep alone. learn how to take over the whole bed, and steal all the covers

how to be approachable at bars and not give off that "I'm in a committed relationship" vibe

how to reclaim songs and give them new memories

how to not plan meals for two in my head when I'm at the grocery store

how to call him "ex"

that I am wonderful. and worthy of true, clear love.

happy monday, friends. xo

OVER THE WEEKEND + KATE TURNS 3

over the weekend there was a halloween-themed birthday party
for the newly three-year-old kate,
(who is in the awesome phase where picking your nose is the
most hilarious thing you can do in a photo op)
I was cold enough to steal / bust out the thick socks,
the giants dominated the world series!
and all I can hear outside my window right now is fireworks, car alarms,
and various brass instruments. and maybe a few gunshots.

happy monday.
